Putting AI to the Test

Art and Design Put to the Test by AI

As a scientific discipline, Artificial Intelligence was founded—or at least named—in 1956, but it drew on several decades of theory and practice in computer science, cybernetics, psychology, and cognitive science. It also built upon two millennia of philosophical interest in reasoning and mathematical logic. Has fiction—whether in the realm of myths, thought experiments (Aristotle pondered the future of slaves and masters in a world of automation), or science fiction since the 19th century—also largely anticipated the ethical debates surrounding the use of Artificial Intelligence and, more broadly, automation?

Group Activities

March 2025
Workshop at ÉSADHAR led by Oualid Lazrak (artist, ENSP Arles) and Yannick Vernet (head of the fablab and digital projects, ENSP Arles). Work to raise students’ awareness of the ethical, ecological,
and aesthetic issues related to AI and digital technologies.

January 2025
Workshop “Oh no, not again: ‘we’re doomed’”… at ESAD Orléans. AI: pessimistic vs. optimistic?
Rather than just talking about AI, let’s explore it, co-create with it, make it speak rather than just talk about it—but talk about it anyway, tell its story too, play with prompts, and generate new forms of publishing, new graphic forms,
new narratives, new sounds; is something new even possible with AI?
(Text written in .txt, not with ChatGPT).

November 2024
Conference on Artificial Intelligence and Images: My Aesthetic, Ethical, and Technological Challenges at the ENSP in Arles with Antonio Somaini, Sébastien Thon, Serena Villata, Caroline Delieutraz, Ethel Lilienfeld, and Fabien Giraud.

Roundtable: Artificial Intelligence, Its Implications for Creation and Education.
